Childline 1098
Imagine a 24-hour confidential emergency hot line for children. India’s first.
ChildLine provides 24-hour, toll free, emergency phone service for children in need of care and protection. Any child or concerned adult can call 1098 any time of the day or night. We especially want to help children who are being treated violently or sexually abused by adults.
Each call centre has a team of trained youth who answer calls 24 hours a day. Within 60 minutes the team rushes to the child to resolve the crisis. This may involve going to a police station, the Juvenile Welfare Board to or a hospital. We remain in contact with the child until the crisis ends and then offer options for long term rehabilitation.
Results during 2017-18:
- Rescue: 442 cases were reported, of which Devanahalli had 106 cases, Hoskote had 111 cases, Doddaballapur had 108 cases and Nelamangala had 97 cases. There were 217 cases under phone testing activities. Of the 111 cases in Hoskote, 20-25 children have been rescued. And of the 106 cases in Devanahalli, about 20 cases have been rescued.
- Open House programme: 5 open house programmes were held during the year
- Outreach and awareness: About 6680 children from 130 schools and child care centres attended the outreach and awareness programmes.
- Phone testing: 217 cases were reported during the year
Right to Education Task Force
Sparsha Trust participates in the Right to Education Task Force (RTE) a coalition of NGOs working to provide financial aid for children’s education. By working with the other NGO, we create awareness of RTE in urban and rural Bangalore. We do this through school, college and community outreach.
Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights
Sparsha Trust works as an advisory member on the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. As a member of this organization, we create awareness about Child Rights and work to strengthen Child Rights policies.
During 2017-18, Sparsha Trust worked on the Karnataka Chapter of Bharat Yatra, initiated by Nobel Laureate Shri Kailash Satyarthi. We worked in about 10 Districts to create awareness among the community on children safety and the Safe India Movement.
Sparsha Trust is also mobilizing the alumni in various villages in order to get their support for school development in their respective areas (Bangalore Rural District and Kolar District). Sparsha participated in many consultations and training programmes organized by KSCPCR on issues related to child welfare.
National Child Labour Programme
Since 2012, Sparsha Trust has sought to identify child labourers and rehabilitate them into mainstream education. Since many child labourers have never gone to school or have only taken primary classes, there is need to prepare them for regular school.
Supported by the Karnataka Department of Labour, Sparsha Trust provides learning activities to ex-child labour children between 9 and 14 years of age. Some of these kids know basic alphabet and simple words while others have no literacy skills at all. The children engage in song, dance, paper craft, drawing and other activities.
